Quality of SSA Decisions Deteriorating

Posted on:11/21/2011
The quality of decisions by the Social Security Administration is deteriorating. According to Dr. Neil Novin who was working with the SSA until he was fired recently, the SSA is rushing through its decisions.

Two other doctors have claimed that the SSA pressured them to award benefits when they were reluctant to do so. They were instructed by supervisors to treat certain ailments as severe even though they did not agree.

The SSA has not commented on these news reports but claims that the new changes will speed up the process and is cost effective.

The changes – doctors payments being reduced from $90 per hour to $80 per case has resulted in deteriorating decisions. Doctors in an attempt to increase their earnings are tempted to clear more files every hour.

In February 2010 a doctor in Alabama was found to have cleared 80 to 100 files a day. Another one cleared 30 files in an hour. One can only guess the amount of effort put in by these doctors when deciding on the applications.

Another change that has been introduced by the SSA is that the doctor dealing with an application need not be a specialist in the field. This means that a disability claim based on a spinal cord injury could be handled and decided by a gynecologist.
