Applying for SSI Benefits for a Child

Posted on:11/21/2011
When you apply for SSI benefits for a child, the Disability Determination Service (DDS) in your state will whether the child is disabled as defined under the law.

A disability evaluation specialist from the DDS and a medical doctor will consider the facts of the child's case based on the application and information given by all the doctors, clinics, hospitals and professionals who have treated the child.

When medical records are needed, the government will pay a reasonable charge for them. Physicians are asked to provide the medical history of the child. If the history is incomplete or the DDS team needs more information about the child's condition, additional examinations or testing may be required. The SSA will pay for the additional examination or testing and for some travel expenses related to the testing.

Once the entire application has been submitted, it takes two to three months to process the disability claim. If it takes more time to receive the child's medical records or additional examinations or testing are required, the process may take longer.

When a decision has been made, the SSA will send you written notification about their decision. If the decision is favorable, the notification will show the amount of the child's check and the date when payments will begin, including the number of back payments that will be sent. Usually, payments for the eligible disabled are dated from the time of the first application.
