Hempson & Zupanec

Charlotte Social Security Disability Law Attorneys

Social Security Disability law can be confusing. You may be unsure about how to fill out the forms and questionnaires. You may be unclear about what evidence is important and how to get it. You will probably feel frustrated trying to deal with the bureaucracy of the Social Security Administration or perhaps even your own doctor’s office. You may feel unimportant, like you are just a number on a medical chart or a claims file. At the law office of Hempson & Zupanec, we treat you the way we would want to be treated: you are not just a number to us.

Together, Robert E. Hempson and Nancy Zupanec have been representing clients for almost 60 years. At the law office of Hempson & Zupanec, we provide compassionate and conscientious representation to disabled clients. When a disability has left you unable to work, we can help you get the Social Security Disability benefits you may deserve.

We can help you prepare your initial application for Social Security Disability benefits so that it fully demonstrates your need. If your application is denied, we can help you throughout the appeals process. Whether you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, we will help you prepare your case thoroughly.

You are not just a number to us.

In addition to our nearly 60 years of legal experience, our practice is further distinguished in the following ways:

  • We will personally represent you at every stage in the process, including the Social Security hearing.
  • Your case will be handled by an attorney, both for case preparation and representation; we do not use paralegals.
  • We will come to your home to discuss and prepare your case if you are unable to get to our office.
  • We will meet with you in adjoining counties if you are unable to travel to Mecklenburg County.
  • We are easily accessible by phone and return calls promptly.
  • We do extensive case preparation and place particular value on prompt and thorough case development.
  • We work with doctors and other medical professionals in order to obtain and present the most accurate evidence.

We are also available to do lectures or trainings on topics of Social Security Disability law, at no cost, to your group, your clients, or your organization.

I received my undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Tennessee in 1975.  I went on to graduate from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1978.  I served for several years as managing attorney for Appalachian Research and Defense Fund, a legal aid office in Kentucky, and as managing attorney for Legal Services of Southern Piedmont, a legal aid office in Charlotte, North Carolina.  I entered private practice in 1995.

While practicing law in Kentucky and North Carolina, I represented clients in class action lawsuits, as well as individual matters.  I have appeared before judges and magistrates in many different forums, including administrative proceedings, military tribunals, state court actions, and federal court matters, all on both an original and appellate basis.

Throughout my entire legal career, I have advocated for disabled individuals and people facing severe financial and other hardships.  I served as a consumer law and unemployment law specialist.  I worked on an extensive legal project to assist individuals in Mecklenburg County who had credit and other problems become eligible for home loans.  I represented a rural Gaston County community in an effort to ensure that it received safe and appropriate sanitation services.

I am a member of many professional organizations, including: Mecklenburg County Bar Association; North Carolina Bar Association; North Carolina State Bar; North Carolina Trial Lawyers Association; and National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR) .

I was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1985, having previously been a member of the Commonwealth of Kentucky bar before relocating to Charlotte.  I am also admitted to practice in the following federal jurisdictions:  United States District Court, Western District of North Carolina; United States District Court, Middle District of North Carolina; 4th Circuit Court of Appeals; and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

I graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island with a B.A. degree in American Studies.  I subsequently graduated from the College of Law at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.   I served as a staff attorney for Appalachian Research and Defense Fund, a legal aid office in Kentucky, for several years.  My next position was an assistant attorney general, consumer protection division, for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Later I became a staff attorney for Legal Services of Southern Piedmont and Legal Aid of North Carolina, legal aid offices in Charlotte, before entering private practice.  I have been licensed to practice law for almost thirty years.

I have considered it an important part of my advocacy to be involved in projects that have an impact on the legal system and its participants.  For example, I have been a member of the Mecklenburg County Model Courts Advisory Committee, whose mission it is to set up best practices procedures in various areas of the law.  This work has included my active participation on several subcommittees involving mediation, mental health evaluations, and local rules of procedure.  I have been a faculty member for a Mecklenburg County Bar Association seminar.  I planned and facilitated a countywide conference on domestic violence.  In addition, I was a member of a team that drafted statutes enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly in regard to appointing standby guardians to care for the minor children of terminally ill parents.

I have completed the forty-hour Dispute Resolution Commission-approved Family and Divorce Mediation training.  I am a member of the following professional organizations:  Mecklenburg County Bar Association; North Carolina Bar Association; North Carolina State Bar; North Carolina Trial Lawyers Association; and National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR).

I was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1985, having previously been a member of the Commonwealth of Kentucky bar.  I am admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Western District of North Carolina, and the United States District Court, Middle District of North Carolina.
