Adult with Special Needs

Posted on:5/15/2012
Support for an adult with special needs can be very complicated. Maybe by working, he can earn enough money to pay for an apartment, but not enough to pay for medications and medical care.

If he gets supplemental income from Social Security and wants to marry, he could lose part of the benefits that are important to his survival. If he gets disability income as a disabled adult child (DAC), he may lose all of his benefits if he marries— unless he marries another DAC. Checking out such issues is vital before taking action to create a living/work situation for an adult with disabilities.

In the United States, funding and support for programs tend to change from good to bad and back again. Policies that make a plan feasible may change at any given time; you can be in violation without even knowing it! Lawmakers seem to be trying to improve the lives of persons who experience disabilities.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a small monthly benefit from the Social Security Administration based on disability. While not generally enough to live on without other funding sources, eligibility for SSI is often important to get other benefits.

In determining whether your son or daughter's dream is feasible, you will likely have to learn more about “the system” than you ever dreamed existed. Even if he is high functioning enough to learn to be a self-advocate, he is going to need a lot of help researching programs, funding sources, policies, and red tape. You will have to learn the policies and procedures to help him learn them.
