The US Social Security Administration (SSA) is within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It Social Security Administration succeeded the Social Security Board in 1946.

In 1953 it was transferred to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, remaining within Health and Human Services when President Carter extracted the Department of Education. From the 1970s the SSA argued the case for its own independence, a case that was finally won under the Clinton administration in 1994.

For social security purposes the US is divided into ten regions, each headed by a Regional Commissioner. A nationwide field organization of ten regional offices. It has six service centers and over 1,300 local offices. These offices and service centers guide and direct all aspects of the cash benefit program operations of the SSA.

The major programs administered by the SSA are the Federal Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance Program (title II), which provides income to individuals and families when workers retire, die or become disabled and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program (title XVI) which provides a federally financed floor of income for aged, blind or disabled individuals who meet income and resource requirements.

Social Security became the most politically popular of social policies. Its social insurance mechanisms enjoyed widespread support among young and old. Fully 95 percent of the work force participates in the program. More than 50 million people including retired workers and their survivors, as well as the disabled, receive benefits.
